Impact:
An official announcement will come later on Saturday at Phoenix, but it appears that Labonte will drive the TRG entry full-time next season. The veteran driver has done a good job finishing out this season for this small race team.
In one of NASCAR's biggest "wild card" races, 2000 Sprint Cup Champion Bobby Labonte piloted the No. 71 TRG Motorsports Chevrolet to the team's first Top-10 finish of 2009 in the AMP Energy 500 at Talladega Superspeedway, trgmotorsports.com reports.
Impact:
Labonte was able to pilot this small team as high as second during the 500-mile event at Talladega. He kept the No. 71 Chevrolet in and around the Top 15 for much of the race. When the late caution flags waved, Labonte kept the car out of trouble and collected TRG Motorsports best finish of the season.
Bobby Labonte will run a brand new No. 71 TRG Motorsports Chevy at this weekend's Sprint Cup Series race at Kansas Speedway, TRG Motorsports PR reports.
Impact:
The No. 71 team will get the chance to break in their new car at Kansas this week with veteran driver Labonte behind the wheel. The last time Labonte raced for this team on an intermediate oval, he earned a Top-20 finish at Atlanta. He could turn in a similar performance in Sunday's Price Chopper 400 at Kansas.
After Bobby Labonte was dismissed from his driving duties for seven of the remaining 12 races in the No. 96 Hall of Fame Racing Ford, the 2000 Sprint Cup champ has agreed to pilot the No. 71 TaxSlayer Chevy for TRG Motorsports in those seven events starting this weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway, FOX Sports reports.
Impact:
Labonte will give a real boost to the small No. 71 team for these select races. He also brings his past-champion's provisional start to the deal as well. David Gilliland will still race for the team in the five remaining events.
Hall of Fame Racing would like to keep Bobby Labonte as its driver of the No. 96 team and likely will not be affiliated with Yates Racing next year, scenedaily.com reports.
Impact:
Even though Labonte has been replaced for seven of the final 12 races this season by Erik Darnell the team would like to retain him going into next season. Things don't look too good for Hall of Fame Racing going into 2010 from a sponsorship stand point, and losing their affiliation with Yates Racing. Labonte could easily end up being a free agent driver by the end of this year.
