Impact:
Hornish threw a big speed up on the pylon at PIR to open the weekend in Phoenix. The driver of the No. 77 Dodge has fallen into a rut of late, but his brilliant Top 10 at PIR in April of this year appears to have been no fluke. Hornish could capture another Top 10 on Sunday in the Checker Auto Parts 500.
Hornish Jr. considers Phoenix International Raceway to be a special track in his racing career. The "Jewel of the Desert" is the site of Hornish's first IndyCar Series win in 2001, penskeracing.com reports.
Impact:
Phoenix was also the site of his first Sprint Cup Series Top 10. The one-mile oval in Arizona has been a favorable track for the Penske Racing driver. Hornish finished ninth in April's Subway Fresh Fit 500, so he is a great sleeper play at PIR on Sunday.
Hornish Jr., driver of the Penske Racing No. 77 Mobil 1 Dodge Charger, returns to Lowe's Motor Speedway after a successful showing in May at the 1.5-mile quad-oval, penskeracing.com reports.
Impact:
The Penske Racing driver won the NASCAR Showdown during All-Star weekend at Charlotte and he cracked the Top 20 in the Coca-Cola 600 a week later at the intermediate oval. The No. 77 team is coming off a good Top 15 run at Fontana and should easily carry that momentum to LMS this weekend.
Hornish Jr. has just one start at Kansas Speedway in Cup Series competition but is no stranger to racing at the 1.5-mile tri-oval, penskeracing.com reports.
Impact:
Hornish has a lot of IRL experience at Kansas Speedway, so he's very familiar with the intermediate oval. He's had a good deal of success on these style track this season in Sprint Cup racing. Hornish should challenge the Top 15 in Sunday's 400-mile event at Kansas.
Hornish Jr. captured an eighth-place finish in the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 at Richmond International Raceway on Saturday night, penskeracing.com reports.
Impact:
The No. 77 team looked very good in cracking the Top 10 at RIR. Hornish kept his Dodge up front for most of the race and was able to hold on to collect his seventh Top-10 finish of the season. Short tracks have been a strength for this team in 2009, so Hornish should be good at New Hampshire this weekend as well.
